In 1513 Brindle bowmen marched
north to Flodden to join the English
in the defeat of the Scots.
The
Battle of Flodden or Flodden
Field was fought in the county
of Northumberland, in northern
England on September 9, 1513,
between an invading Scots army
under King James IV and an English
army commanded by Thomas Howard,
Earl of Surrey. It ended in
a bloody defeat for the Scots
and was the largest battle (in
terms of numbers) fought between
the two nations.
1553
“In 1553 Brindle Parish had to
furnish 14 men to the Lancashire
Military muster”
(Entry in Vol. 1, Bannister Cuttings
in Chorley Library).
1553
was in Tudor times. It saw the
death of King Edward VI (only
son of King Henry VIII), Lady
Jane Grey being Queen for nine
days, followed by Mary Tudor
as Queen Mary I.
Crimean War
William Graham, buried 31st May
1902 “formerly of the Scots Guards
– served in the Crimea”.
(Per page 113, entry 900 in Brindle
Parish Register of Burials). He
was born in Dolphinholme near Lancaster
in 1835 and lived at Gorton Brook
Cottage, Smithy Lane, Brindle. The
1901 Census recorded him as being
an “Army Pensioner”.
The
Crimean War was fought against
the Russians from 1853 – 1856
and is famous (amongst others)
for the Charge of the Light
Brigade and Florence Nightingale.
‘Chelsea Pensioners’ with a
Brindle connection
The men were not “Chelsea Pensioners”
as known today (with their red coats,
etc.). The name was given to all
men from the British Army who left
with a pension – their records were
simply held at the Royal Hospital,
Chelsea. The National Archives W097
list records such men from 1760
to 1854. Those with a Brindle connection
are listed, as follows:
ABBOTT, Thomas b.
Brindle. Discharged aged 43. Served
31st Foot Regiment (Huntingdon Regiment
of Foot). Document range: 1805 -
1820.

in the village in 1824, the
1861 Census had him living with
his wife Lydia in Cowling, Chorley;
he worked as an “Overlooker
/ Cotton Weaver”. The 1871 Census
recorded him living alone at
2 Fishwick Road in Preston where
he worked in the cotton industry.
Ten year later the Census showed
him as an “Inmate” at the Fulwood
Workhouse in Preston, describing
his former occupation as “Clerk”.
There was no record of him on
the 1891 or 1901 Census (it
could be surmised that he died
at Fulwood Workhouse).
CLARKSON, George

16 years service. Served 26th Foot
Regiment (Cameronian Regiment of
Foot). Document range: 1802
CRITCHLEY James

Served 1st Foot Guards. Document

Born
in the village in 1806, the
1841 Census records him as “Joseph”
(possibly due to his new born
son being called the same),
living at Gowans Farm in Brindle
and working as a “Cotton Weaver”.
Ten years later the Census had
him down at Lady Hole Cottage,
off Marsh Lane in the village
working as a “Hand Loom Weaver”
(possibly at home in the cottage).
There was no record of him on
the 1861 Census but his wife
and family were living at Harrys
Croft on Marsh Lane.

the case in 1861. However, by
the 1871 Census there was no
record of him.
